James H. Buchan is a partner in Gowling WLG’s Intellectual Property Group. He previously served as firm managing partner – external for Gowling WLG in Canada and as a member of the firm’s international board of trustees.

In addition to his experience in the areas of intellectual property advisory and enforcement work, James is also a former leader of the Intellectual Property Litigation Group and a former co-leader of the Trademarks Group.

As a barrister and solicitor, James' expertise in the IP field is broad-based and extensive, covering a wide range of IP-related contentious and non-contentious matters, including patent, trademark and copyright litigation. He has appeared as counsel of record in more than 25 reported decisions of the Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada, and has been counsel in over 750 trademark opposition and expungement proceedings before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO).

Year after year, James is recognized by various legal publications for his in-depth knowledge and dedication to client service excellence. These publications include The Best Lawyers in Canada, World Trademark Review and the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory.

James remains active in numerous national and international legal committees and industry groups, including the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC), the International Trademark Association (INTA), the Law Leaders Forum, and the American Bar Association.
